Swords Rex – favourite to win the Star Sports English Greyhound Derby outright – stole the show on Quarter Finals night in front of a packed grandstand at Towcester Racecourse.
The talented two-year-old clocked 28.93 seconds when winning the fourth and final quarter final from Romeo Top Gun and Ballymac Finn to book his spot in Saturday’s semi-finals.
Swords Rex was one of four semi final qualifiers on the night for Irish trainer Graham Holland, who also qualified Jacktavern Bella, Clona Duke and Gaytime Nemo who won Quarter Final Three.
Assistant trainer Nicky Holland said she was thrilled with the night’s work.
“It was another brilliant run (by Swords Rex),” said Nicky. “He ran really well, and he’s returned in one piece and is in the semi finals which is all that matters to us.
“We’re thrilled to have four qualify, and Gaytime Nemo trapped really well in his heat too. He’s so strong and is coming back from injury so every week he’s getting stronger.
“His owners will be chuffed watching back at home and he was a deserving winner.”
Other winners on the night included the Patrick Janssens trained Romeo Command who remains unbeaten in the competition while 10/1 outsider Mystical Mario sprung a surprise in Quarter Final Two for Perry Barr based John Lambe.
There were shocks on the night also as Boylesports Gift, Romeo Hanzo and Ballymac Marino exited the competition.
The Star Sports English Greyhound Derby resumes at Towcester Racecourse on Saturday, June 24, when the semi finals take place. The first three greyhounds home in each race will qualify for the following Saturday’s £175,000 Grand Final.
