It’s that time of year again with the Irish starting to eye up the greatest race in world greyhound racing, the Star Sports/ TRC English Derby. Five of the last six winners have been trained in Ireland including the last three at Towcester and preparations are now underway as they bid for a fourth straight success in the classic.
Paul Hennessy has been a regular visitor for many years, winning the Derby twice in the past with Jaytee Jet (2016 Wimbledon) and Priceless Blake (2019 Nottingham) and he is clearly planning on returning this year.
His preparations began last week, trialling four of his team and he returned a week later on Wednesday (March 26th). Lennies Desire was the dog to take out of the session with the inexperienced black moving very well in a 28.98 return. The track was rated .30 slow, highlight just how fast he was going. He is a potential Maiden Derby challenger. Others to trial from the Hennessy kennel include Boylesports Blue, Hello Diego and Barefoot On Fire. The trial session and results can be found below.
Incidentally, Graham Holland’s brilliant Irish Derby champion Bockos Diamond is due to trial at Towcester on Sunday afternoon ahead of a tilt at the Juvenile next month. It really does seem like the Irish are coming!
