Friday June 17: Racing cancelled due to extreme weather

Towcester Racecourse can confirm tonight’s card (June 17) has been cancelled due to forecast high temperatures of 30c.

James Chalkley, Racing Director at Towcester Racecourse, said: “Following a further review of the weather, Friday evening’s meeting at Towcester has been abandoned.

“While we feel that we could race in accordance with the GBGB hot weather policy, we do not want to add unnecessary risk to travelling greyhounds being transported to the track at a time which would be the hottest point of the day.

“I have spoken to a few trainers this morning, and while their vans are fully kitted out with air-con or air management systems, some have rightly pointed out the possible consequences of a break-down or Friday afternoon road congestion. At the point where trainers are not totally comfortable with travelling the decision must be made as welfare is always our foremost priority.

“The trainer’s views must be taken seriously and there is no pressure whatsoever from us for them to travel in these circumstances. An earlier decision had already been made to move the open race competitions from Friday to Sunday to avoid any long-distance travel from non-local trainers.

“Thankfully the weather forecast is a lot cooler for Saturday and Sunday and we look forward to an excellent weekend of racing and Derby Semi Final supporting cards.”

Anyone who made advanced bookings in our restaurant, VIP or general admission areas will be contacted directly by Towcester Racecourse. We appreciate the patience and understanding of racegoers.
