THE DERBY HAS STARTED AND IT IS INCREDIBLE…….
The crowds flock to towcester racecourse as Derby fever takes hold
The crowds flocked to Towcester last week and they got their rewards. To say the Star Sports English Greyhound Derby started in explosive fashion would be a gross understatement. It was a magical start to the world’s greatest greyhound competition and the three opening nights were truly very special.
In the very first heat of the £350,000 competition, fans witnessed Murrys Act become the first greyhound in history to break the 29 second barrier over the 500m at Towcester. Kevin Boon’s greyhound recorded a scintillating 28.99 seconds.
That set the scene, but few would have expected to see what unfolded. Step up to the plate Clares Rocket. You may remember him, the dog that hit headline news after he was allegedly kidnapped in his native Ireland and it was reported there was a million-pound ransom set.
Thankfully, this star overcame that ordeal and delivered a performance that will live long in the memory of those that witnessed his mind-blowing track-record breaking run of 28.77 seconds. His winning margin of over 8 lengths, by no means flattered this canine superstar. The sponsors Star Sports were quick to react and he is now the 8/1 favourite to be crowned the 87th English Greyhound Derby Champion.
Nearly 200 top-class greyhounds set out in a bid to win the biggest prize the sport of greyhound racing offers.
Remember it is FREE ENTRY for the rounds up to and including the Semi-Final and the FUN is guaranteed!
Tickets are still available for the final on Saturday 1st July, for more information please visit our Greyhound Derby page http://towcester-racecourse.co.uk/greyhound-derby/
