A TRULY spectacular day…
Towcester racecourse makes history!
Well, what a day it was on Saturday 1st July. The sun shone again after 6 qualifying rounds culminating in the most exciting event ever to be staged, in recent years, here at Towcester Racecourse.
Around 6000 people attended the Star Sports English Greyhound Derby Final and everyone had smiles on their faces. Young and old enjoyed a thrilling day of greyhound racing with the world’s fastest greyhounds competing for the coveted title and the First Prize of £175,000!
The atmosphere was electric as the greyhounds and their handlers made their way to the starting traps. Bets were placed on the favourites Clares Rocket and Tyrur Shay but who would take the title?
The anticipation had the crowd buzzing as the cacophony of cheers from the crowd grew into that famous ‘Derby Roar’ and according to one spectator, it was said to be louder than any Wimbledon had ever heard.
As the 6 world class greyhounds set off to a thunderous cheer that 28.92 seconds was the most exhilarating I’ve ever witnessed here as rank outsider, Astute Missile, swept around the last bend and held the lead to the finishing post, leaving everyone stunned!
It truly was a dream come true for Trainer Seamus Cahill and his team to lift his own ‘Pot of Gold’ at the end of the rainbow (which miraculously appeared right on cue above the Empress Stand) as he was awarded the coveted Derby Trophy.
Then the party really got started and the celebrations and merriment continued with everyone rocking to top radio DJ Jo Whiley long into the night.
The comments and feedback we’ve had has been amazing. So many people have expressed what a fantastic day it was and on Monday morning the phones were ringing off the hook with people wanting to book for next year and to pass their congratulations on to CEO Kevin Ackerman and the Towcester team for all their hard work that went in to putting on such an amazing event.
The date for next years Derby Final has yet to be confirmed and bookings are already being requested. So watch this space for the big announcement of next years Derby Final date and make sure you don’t miss it, as no doubt it is set to be even bigger and better!
