THE COUNTDOWN BEGINS TO THE STAR SPORTS ENGLISH GREYHOUND DERBY FINAL

The greatest greyhounds from Ireland and the UK are about to embark on a mission to win the world’s greatest greyhound race

The Star Sports English Greyhound Derby, with total prize-money of £350,000 (£175,000 to-the-winner), on the 1st July 2017. This is the 87th running of this prestigious event and 91st anniversary. Since 1927 greyhound fans have witnessed some truly magnificent winners. We have decided to produce a list of what we think are the 3 greatest winners of this incredible competition in the modern era. Do you agree/disagree with our list?

3 – HIT THE LID, (Soda Fountain – Cailin Dubh, 1986). Over the course of the Derby, some of the big names normally get knocked out, not in 1988. Arguably the greatest ever Derby final in history, fans witnessed six incredible greyhounds head to the traps. It was Hit The Lid who came out on top. He deserves his place on any ‘Derby Greats List’ and was a superb champion. Watch him win the 1988 Derby here;

2 – WESTMEAD HAWK, (Sonic Flight – Mega Delight 2003). The dual 2005 and 2006 winner, just had to be in the list. We deliberated for many hours, should he be number-one or number-two, we ended up going for number-two. He was a real fans favourite, his style of powerful running displays ensured he entered the hearts of the greyhound public. Watch the Hawk win the 2006 Derby here;

1 – SOME PICTURE, (Slaneyside Hare – Spring Season, 1994). The 1997 winner Some Picture comes in at number-one on our list of greatest ever winners. Charlie Lister OBE is nicknamed the ‘Derby King’, it all started with this greyhound. He was sensational on the night and clocked a remarkable 28.23 (old side) at Wimbledon. We doubt any greyhound would have beaten him on the night and his performance will live long in the memory of those who were lucky enough to see it. If you have never seen this great champion, watch him here;
